belfast sinks

Wooden Kitchen worktops - Belfast type sinks

Belfast sinks should have overhangs of 10mm at sides and back. The depth of the cutout should allow the sink to project at the top front edge, by half the sink wall thickness. The cutout in wooden kitchen worktops for Belfast sinks should overlap the edges of the sink by half the thickness of the sink's back and side walls.

For accuracy, quality and safety, Belfast sink wooden kitchen worktops cutouts should be benchcut using jigs and a router, never a jig saw.

Trial fittingtrial fitting
Put all the pieces of wooden kitchen worktops onto the base units for a trial fitting.
Remember to include the 4 - 5mm expansion gap between the edges and ends and the walls.
Check that everything is good before fixing down the edges and end and the walls.
Check that everything is good before fixing down the tops, including:
- the final position of any Belfast kitchen sink
- the relationship of any kitchen worktops cutouts to their base units - where front rails may need to be cut away or re-fixed vertically.
Make adjustments as necessary.

Belfast sinks, installation
Position Belfast sinks as directed above. Fix it into the base unit by bedding the sink into beads of low modulus silicone. Leave it to set. Edge sealing and wooden kitchen worktops oilingtap plinth
All unfinished wooden kitchen worktops surfaces: edges, ends, top and bottom faces, must be edge sealed as necessary and oiled before installation.

Clean off any marks and smooth any roughness from the timber using a minimum 150 grit abrasive paper before sealing and oiling.

a) Edge seal
All concealed edges: under lay-on appliances and sinks, around tap holes and worktops bolt holes, fitting notches and slots, also concealed endgrain on tap plinth, butt and mitre worktops joints must be sealed before installation.

Use Cascamite resin wood glue. Apply a liberal coat of either and allow it to cure before assembly. Silicone is unsuitable for this operation. Note:
Wipe off any overspill from the visible surfaces and when dry, sand them clean with 150 grit paper. This prevents the edge seal from affecting uptake of the kitchen worktops oil finish.

b)Wooden Kitchen Worktops oil
All other unfinished surfaces: top, bottom, edges and ends, must be oiled before installation with Second Nature worktops oil. Apply 3 coats to all surfaces and edges. Let the oil dry thoroughly between coats. Apply 5 coats to all visible endgrain, paying particular attention to cutouts for undermounted sinks.
Follow the directions on the can.

positionWith semi-processed wooden kitchen worktops there may be a discrepancy in colour between the pre-finished and newly finished parts of the wood.
This is quite normal and will quickly disappear as the new surfaces weather in service.

Fixing
The wooden kitchen worktops must be fixed down via the crossrails to the base unit ends (not to base unit front rails and not via the freizes or endgrain rails!)

Re-position any crossrails as necessary before installation so that they will align with base unit ends. Make sure that the crossrails' slotted fixings are not over-tightened and restrict the natural movement of the laminated.
